Washington, Sept. 13th 1837-

Friend Coffin

[illegible] a resolution [recheck] this morning of John L. A[illegible]y requesting the [illegible] to [blank] before us what correspondence had taken place [blank] to the Annexation of Texas to this government.  I thought I discovered a fearful determination on the part of the South to [blank] that object I hope we may succeed in getting out the correspondence in that event [we?] send it you.  I have sent for a dozen or two of the [blank] I sent you [blank] to distribute over the district.  I have awful foreboding about the result of this [blank] I am not even certain what our own state will do from what my colleagues informs me from other section I think our district is correct and as for myself I could not be instructed to do such a thing my constituents [r]ight to the B[blank] my power but they will never under any circumstances induce me to do a thing so [blank] to humanity & to the future wellfare of my country I do hope the friends of humanity in our state will be [blank] [blank] when the publick mind the [blank] character of this [blank] [blank]  Our people are wholly informed of the true character & position of the Judiciary & our government & the mexican government let the devil be [blank] & let the wolves in sheeps clothing be exposed in their true character to mankind we are standing upon the brink of a fearful [blank] a [blank] will [blank] do the [blank] this [blank] sond of Guaraneeing the Liberty of [Jesus] has a witchery in it well calculated to [blank] are all those uninformed the true character of the Struggle.
