Coffin Letter 5

Business letter from the publishers Pugh & Alvord to Coffin & Parker.

Full Text:

Cincinnati 12th April 1842

Coffin & Parker

New Garden, Ia

We have to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 26th March some ten days ago: & our excuse for not answering it at the time is that we have been in hope to be able before this, to give you our explicit answer in regard to any proportion of moneywhich we might recieve from the Insurance office applying to to your property.  The truth is we have not yet been able to make a settlement with them, though we expect to do so in the course of tomorrow or next day.  Your letter of the 9th [inst] came to hand this morning and as your request is so pressing for us to write you [unreadable] we have concluded to drop you a line now [unreadable] you again more fully when the result of our settlement with the underwriters is known.  The Bulk meat has not been sold, on the day of sale, the officers of the Insurance companies came foreward [unreadable] objection to the sale of any of the property except such as was in a perishable condition & we were obliged to submit to their wishes or suffer ourselves to be driven into a law suit, which would have kept us out of money some one or two years, which of course we could not afford-

Your meat has been [unreadable] in as good order as possible & is now in the [Swoke?] house, & we think not naturally damaged.  There is no sale for any kind of produce, worse than they are here.  We will do the best we can for you, though we fear there is but little prospect of raising the [H]1.000 you speak of by the time you want it

Yours Truly

Pugh & Alvord
