Abstract

Correspondence, genealogy, autobiographical material, speeches, newspaper clippings, and photographs documenting the lives of Charles F. and Rhoda M. (Johnson) Coffin, 1831-1917.  Charles and Rhoda were Orthodox Quaker ministers with international reputations in prison reform.  Charles was a banker in Richmond, Indiana, and the clerk of Indiana Yearly Meeting of Orthodox Friends from 1857 to 1884.

The Doan Family Papers consist of correspondence, clippings, and reminiscent material of the family of Abel and Phebe (Lindley) Doan of Westfield, Indiana. It is rich in material relating to Earlham College and to Quaker life and activities in the first half of the twentieth century.

The Eli and Mahalah Jay collection contains material regarding their lives and families from roughly the 1840s to the early 1900s. The major strength of the collection is its correspondence section including Jay family correspondence, Ballard correspondence, and Mahalah Jay's Missionary correspondence. The collection also includes journals, addresses, compositions, and essays that express the Jays opinions on many topics. This is a rich collection for nineteenth century Quakerism.

Scope and Contents The Harlow Lindley Collection, although relatively small, is rich in material related to Quaker history and the history of Wayne County, Indiana, especially its educational history.The collection consists of historical materials collected by Lindley and of Lindley’s correspondence with such prominent nineteenth- and twentieth-century Friends as Charles F. This collection reflects Homer Morris’s career as an academic economist and longtime member of the Earlham College board (1930-51),  and especially the Morris’s work for the American Friends Service Committee. It contains class notes, correspondence, calendar book and publications as well as material pertaining to personal business, social justice issues, and the peace movement. Homer Morris was a member of the teaching faculty (1918-28) in Economics, and an alum (Class of 1911).

This collection of material gathered by his son Leonard S. Kenworthy (1912-1990) documents his life and varied activities. It represents his work at various schools and Meetings in New York, Indiana, Ohio, and Washington, D.C., as well as his time with the American Friends Service Committee.

The Thomas E. and Esther B. Jones Collection consists of personal papers of Thomas E. Jones, the president of Fisk University from 1926 to 1946 and Earlham College from 1946 to 1958, and his wife Esther (Balderston) Jones, a missionary teacher in Japan.  It contains significant material on Quaker work in Japan, race relations, Earlham College, and Quaker affairs in the twentieth century.
