Biography
Elbert Russell (1871-1951) came to Earlham from West Newton, Indiana, graduating at the head of the class of 1894. In 1895, he was offered the position of professor of Bible. Russell introduced critical methods of biblical study to Earlham, making himself the target of fierce criticism from fundamentalist Friends. Leaving Earlham in 1915, Russell worked with Quaker organizations and ended his career as Dean of Duke Divinity School.

Charles F. and Rhoda M. Coffin Collection
Correspondence, genealogy, autobiographical material, speeches, newspaper clippings, and photographs documenting the lives of Charles F. and Rhoda M. (Johnson) Coffin, 1831-1917. Charles and Rhoda were Orthodox Quaker ministers with international reputations in prison reform. Charles was a banker in Richmond, Indiana, and the clerk of Indiana Yearly Meeting of Orthodox Friends from 1857 to 1884.

The papers include correspondence, copies of his published writings, unpublished manuscripts, a large collection of handwritten sermon notes, and drafts of both his history of Quakerism and his autobiography.
