Biography

Lawrence “Pete” Leland served as acting president of the College in 1984-85.

Leland was Earlham’s only president born outside of the United States. A native of Canada, Leland grew up in Wabash, Indiana, and graduated from Earlham in 1938. He served in the U.S. Army in Europe during World War II. An insurance executive, he was a member of the Earlham board 1958-1966. He returned to Earlham as acting president for the 1984-1985 school year. An outstanding basketball player, he was an honorary member of the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame. Leland focused on raising money during his year as acting president and prepared for the hiring of the next president.
