Biography

A native of Wayne County, Indiana, from an old Quaker family, David Worth Dennis (1849-1916) graduated from Earlham in 1873. After teaching in several Quaker schools and serving as president of Wilmington College, he returned to Earlham as professor of biology in 1884. His specialty was ornithology.

After the Lindley Hall fire, everyone agreed that Earlham needed a new science building. But first the need to build Carpenter, then the Depression, and finally World War II, intervened. Tom Jones made it a priority, and Dennis Hall, named for David W. Dennis, opened in 1952.
