Biography

Jackson H. Bailey (1925-1996), from a Maine Quaker family, graduated from Earlham in 1950. After earning a Ph.D. in history from Harvard University, he returned to Earlham in 1959. The founder of Earlham’s programs in Japanese and East Asian studies, he also was men’s volleyball coach from 1959 to 1980. He received an award for outstanding teaching from the American Historical Association in 1989.
