The Bibles in this collection have been preserved for one or more of the following reasons:

  • Belonged to a notable Quaker person or family.
  • Belonged to Earlham College and used for a specific purpose. Example: The Earlham Hall Bible, which was used for morning meetings, c. 1895-1930.
  • Belonged to a Quaker meeting.
  • Contain genealogical information.
  • Contain photographs of the family the Bible belonged to.
  • Book is interesting and can be used as a teaching tool in classes visiting the Archive. Example: Traveling Salesman Sample Book.
These Bibles were used by the people, families or meetings that owned them, and because they were used heavily, many are in extremely poor condition; many have damaged bindings. Most are from the 19th century.

I believe this testament was given to Henrietta S. White by Mrs. William Showalter, mother of George and Marvin "Will" Showalter was a Civil War veteran who lived about a mile east of the old Rich Square School in a little unpainted house.
