Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

The Marian Henley Goodwell Collection consists of materials relating to the ancestry of Marian Henley Goodwell, a 1938 Earlham College graduate and active genealogist. It focuses largely on her father's family, the Henleys of Carthage, Rush County, Indiana, but also includes significant genealogical material on other Quaker families, especially Steere, Kenworthy, Morrow, and Thomas. It also includes significant local historical material for Carthage, Indiana. Most of this collection consists of her genealogical research material on descendants of Patrick Henley (died ca. 1691), a Quaker who lived on Albemarle Sound in North Carolina. It includes abstracts of Quaker meeting records and family bibles, copies of documents such as wills and deeds, and numerous newspaper clippings. Mrs. Goodwell's goal was to write a book on her direct Henley ancestry. She completed only the first five generations, a copy of which will be found in FPG VI. Mrs. Goodwell's maternal grandfather was Truman Cooper Kenworthy (1863-1952), who was a prominent Quaker minister in Iowa and Indiana. The collection includes material relating to his career.
