Sharpless-Plummer Family Papers
Scope and Contents
Letters of the family of Blakey Sharpless (1787-1853), Orthodox Quaker printer of Philadelphia, and his wife Mary (Offley) Sharpless (1793-1865). Of particular interest are letters to Jane M. Plummer (1790-1865) of Mt. Pleasant, Ohio, a Sharpless cousin, concerning the Hicksite Separation, and a letter dated 5th Mo. 11, 1833, from Mildred Ratcliff to Jane M. Plummer.

Biographical or Historical Information
Blakey Sharpless was born near West Chester, Pennsylvania, in 1787, the son of Nathan and Rachel (Baldwin) Sharpless. He taught at Westtown School 1810-1814, then moved to Philadelphia. He and Thomas Kimber formed the publishing firm of Kimber and Sharpless, specializing in Bibles and schoolbooks. In 1820 Blakey Sharpless married Mary Offley (1793-1865), daugher of Daniel and Ann Offley of Philadelphia. They sided with the Orthodox during the Hicksite Separation. After Blakey Sharpless retired from bsuiness, they moved to Haddonfield, New Jersey, where he died in 1853.
