Scope and Contents

Hollingsworth's correspondence consists of letters from constituents voicing opinions on a variety of issues, including U.S. responses to World War I, immigration, the tariff, and patronage. Other letters concern constituent services, esepecially veterans' pensions, as Hollingsworth served on the House Invalid Pensions Committee. Several writers are Quakers from Belmont County, Ohio, which was part of Hollingsworth's district.

Biographical or Historical Information

David Adams Hollingsworth was born in Belmont County, Ohio, Nov. 21, 1844, the son of Elihu and Lydia Ann (Fisher) Hollingsworth. His father was born a Friend but lost his membership before marriage. David A. Hollingsworth attended Mount Union College before enlisting in the Union army. After his discharge, he studied law and began practice in Cadiz, Harrison County, Ohio, which was his home until his death. Active in Republican politics, he served as a county prosecutor, state senator, state aottorney general, and as a member of Congress 1909-1911 and 1915-1919. He died in Cadiz, Ohio, December 3, 1929.
