Scope and Contents
Correspondents include David H. Bennett, Ann Branson, Amos Doan, Richard Fawcett, Edward Richie, and Edward H. Wood. Of special interest are letters detailing treatment of offenders against the Discipline, relating to the Civil War, and criticizing the unorthodox Practices of Western Yearly Meeting after Balderston attended its sessions in 1871. The correspondence reflects the attitudes and opinions of Friends with strong Wilburite tendencies.

Biographical or Historical Information
Mark Balderston was born in Philadelphia, Dec. 25, 1820, the son of Mark and Elizabeth (Lloyd) Balderston. In 1854, he married under Concord Monthly Meeting Ann Scattergood (1829-1858), daughter of William and Elizabeth (Comfort) Scattergood. They had three daughters. In 1869 he married Lydia Van Vlarcom, a natiuve of Maine.
Balderston lived most of his life in Philadelphia, where he was a carpenter and builder. For many years he was an overseer for the Philadelphia Monthly Meeting of Friends for the Northern District (Orthodox), but before his death he moved to Haddonfield, New Jersey. He died there Dec. 10, 1889.
