Biographical or Historical Information

The earliest papers in the collection concern the estate of Allen Farquhar, born ca. 1719 in Ireland, who died in 1800 in Fayette County, Pennsylvania. He married Sarah Moore (ca 1733-1829)  in 1748. They spent most of their married life as members of Pipe Creek Monthly Meeting in what is now Carroll County, Pennsylvania, before moving within the bounds of Redstone Monthly Meeting in western Pennsylvania. Their son was Thomas Farquhar (1751-1847) who married Hannah Edmundson (1765-1811), daughter of William and Mary Edmundson  of York County, Pennsylvania. Both died in Washington County, Pennsylvania. Thomas and Hannah (Edmundson) Farquhar had six children, two of whom were Thomas and William.  Thomas was married in 1824, under Westland Monthly Meeting in Washington County, to Ann Dingee, daughter of Charles and Martha Dingee. In 1816 William Farquhar transferred his membership to Plymouth Monthly Meeting in Jefferson County, Ohio, where other relatives, including his uncle William Farquhar, lived. There in 1817 he married his first cousin Hannah Talbott (born 1802), the daughter of Joseph and Mary (Farquhar) Talbott. They were disowned and apparently never regained their membership. William Farqhar apparently took his family back to Washington County, where he died April 3, 1826.
