Scope and Contents
This colelction of papers of Horace G. Alexander includes a scattering of correspondence, including letters to and from D. Elton Trueblood, Thomas C. Kennedy, Kenneth Barnes, J. Ormerod Greenwood, Kathleen Lonsdale, David Mitrany, and Hallam Tennyson. Also included are memoranda concerning his time in India and materials concerning Quaker affairs.

Biographical or Historical Information
Horace Gundry Alexander (1889-1989) was born in Croyden, England, into a family with deep Quaker roots. After graduating from Cambridge in 1912, Alexander became an antiwar activist and conscientious objector during World War I. From 1919 to 1944 he was on the staff of Woodbrooke, the Quaker study center in Birmingham. Alexander had an international reputation as an ornithologist. He also developed a deep interest in India, becoming a friend of Mahatma Gandhi. After marrying an American Friend, he moved to the United States in 1969, and died at Crosslands, Pennsylvania.
