Elam Unthank Family Collection
Content Description
Pages from the family Bible, with records, of Elam Unthank; also photographs of members of the Unthank family. Of particular interest is a c.d.v of Elam's mother, Anna (Brittain) Unthank Hobbs (1779-1875), a prominent Orthodox Quaker minister in North Carolina and Indiana. Elam Unthank (1814-1885) was born in Guilford County, North Carolina, the son of Josiah and Anna (Brittain) Unthank. He migrated to Wayne County, Indiana, with his parents in 1830. New Garden Monthly Meeting in Wayne County disowned him in 1836 for deviating from plainness, and Elam never returned to Quakerism. In 1837 he married Catherine Curtis (1866-1866). They migrated to Putnam County, Illinois, where she died. The 1880 census shows Elam residing both in Illinois and in Pottawatomie County, Iowa.
