 Collection — Box: 50

Content Description

An engaging mix of biography, poetry and diary entries, with strong religious overtones; being the combined thoughts and writings of Maria and Jane: the mother and sister of Robert Arthington, Jr., of the most important financial supporters of 19th-century Christian missionary work. The "memorial" volume describes Jane Crawshaw's search for a faith that would suit her. Maria Arthington, Jane's mother, transcribed and edited the volume. Jane Crawshaw (nee Arthington) was the sister of Robert Arthington, Jr. (1823-1900) "one of the most remarkable figures in the story of Victorian missionary expansion" (Brian Stanley, abstract from the article "'The Miser of Headingly': Robert Arthington and the Baptist Missionary Society, 1877-1900.") There are various diary entries which feature Robert Jr. in the manuscript. He subsequently inherited a fortune from his parents and spent the latter part of his life giving substantial financial support to various missionary enterprises.
