Helen Bell Hole was a professor of English at Earlham College, 1948-1970, and provost, 1971-1972. Married to Allen D. Hole, professor of foreign languages, 1947-1964, both were active in Quaker affairs. This collection consists of letters to Helen Hole from family and friends in Europe and the US from 1946-1949.

Mary N. (Cope) Hole (1819-1842), daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth (Dixon) Cope and wife of Ethan Allen Hole, was an Orthodox Friend of Middleton, Columbiana County, Ohio. The collection consists of a memorial of Middleton Monthly Meeting.

S. Smith Holloway (1810-1890) was a Gurneyite Friend and physician who lived in Belmont County, Ohio, and Wabash and Henry Counties in Indiana. The collection consists of typescripts of diaries of trips in 1832 and 1840 from Belmont County through Ohio, Indiana, and Michigan.

Scope and Contents Augustine Jones (1834-1925) was a prominent Orthodox Friend and for many years headmaster of the Moses Brown School in Providence, Rhode Island. About 1960 his daughter, Caroline Jones Woodman, donated a number of historical artifacts, documents, and newspapers to Earlham, most of which have been cataloged separately. J. Walter Malone (1857-1935) was a leading minister of Ohio Yearly Meeting (Damascus) and the founder of the Cleveland Bible Institute, now Malone College. The collection consists of material assembled by John Oliver of Malone College, including a family history, "A Brief History of the Remarkable Malones," by Ralph H. Waterbury, and interviews with family and students. Gift of John Oliver, 1991.

David Marshall (1821-1890) was a prominent Friend of Carthage, Rush County, Ind. The collection consists of a draft of a letter from Marshall to Oliver P. Morton, governor of Indiana, 8th Mo. 13, 1862, concerning conscientious objection by Quaker men. Also included is a copy of the letter received by Morton, now in the Indiana State Archives, and correspondence between Ruth Hoskins and Opal Thornburg, Earlham archivist, concerning the letter in 1972.
