The letter is undated, but reference to the death of Madison Campbell places it in 1852, as his tombstone in the Eikenberry Cemetery in Preble County, Ohio, shows that he died May 14, 1852. The recipient was Mary Jordan, born in North Carolina ca 1779.

Lorinda -------, Hagerstown, Indiana, to Mary E. Newcomb, Mayville, New York, Aug. 31, [1874], als, re: death of "Mother Groves," local events. The letter is dated only Aug. 31. The reference to the funeral of "Mother Groves" implies 1874, as Nancy Groves, wife of David Groves, died Aug. 22, 1874, aged 58 years, and is buried at West Lawn Cemetery in Hagerstown. The writer may be Lorinda (Smith) Bohrer (1832-1922), who was the only Lorinda on the 1870 Hagerstown, Indiana, census.
