Joseph R. Evans Family Collection

The Joseph R. Evans Family Collection consists of correspondence, photographs, and genealogical material on a Quaker family that was central to the founding and development of Earlham College. It also documents Quaker reactions to the Civil War, and contains some of the best pre-1900 photographs known of the campus.

Joseph R. Parker (1820- ) was a Friend of Perquimans County, North Carolina. The collection consists of a typescript of a diary of a visit to eastern Ohio to attend Ohio Yearly Meeting (Orthodox) in 1843, and a letter, 1926, from John Newby Parker, son of Joseph, to Walter C. Woodward.

Joseph T. Shearman (1834-1894) was a native of New Bedford, Mass., who operated a packing business in Cincinnati. This collection consists of letters to his mother, Hepsa (Howland) Shearman (1806-1892), of Burlington, N.J., concerning family matters, business, and investments. Purchase, 2008, 2009.

Joseph Tomlinson Notebook

Abstract

Joseph Tomlinson (1778-1820) was a Friend who moved with his family from Randolph County, North Carolina, to Orange County, Indiana, in 1818. This notebook contains a family record, a copy of marriage certificate to Jemima Bray, and a diary of their trip from North Carolina to Indiana. Gift of Chris McFall, 2000.

Joseph Watson Collection

Scope and Contents

The collection consists of five images. One may be a self-portrait of Watson dated 1852. Two others are of Thomas Jay (1813-1890) and his wife Sarah (Yount) Jay (1819-1901), Quakers who lived near West Milton, Ohio. The others are of a young man holding a cigar, a post-mortem child's picture, and an unidentified man.

Joshua Bailey Account Book

Joshua Bailey (1747-1824) was a Quaker farmer and merchant of Sussex and Southampton counties, Virginia. This volume contains his business accounts, many relating to the settlement of estates. Use of the volume was contained, 1833-1869, by another unknown person in Springborough, Warren County, Ohio. Included are family records for Joshua Bailey, his siblings and descendants, and a few records of Black Water Monthly Meeting, Virginia, and Springborough Monthly Meeting, Ohio.

Joshua Maule Papers

Scope and Contents

Maule's papers reflect his business life and Quaker interests. They include correspondence with sympathetic Friends, Wilburite theological documents, and memorials of Sarah Maule and Joshua Maule's father, Jacob Maule. Of special interest is an account of a visit by the Quaker minister Thomas Lamborn to Abraham Lincoln in letters, and other documents reflect the life his youngest child, Sarah Maule, who married Ross L. Walker and also lived in Belmont County.
