The American Friend was a journal published in Richmond, Ind. from January 1867 to December 1868 by a group of prominent young Gurneyite Quakers. This collection includes minutes of the board of editors, 1866-1868, the cashbook listing agents and subscribers, and some miscellaneous manuscripts.

The author of this copybook, Amy Coates, was apparently a Philadelphia Quaker, but she has not been definitely identified. The copybook appears to date from the 1830s and contains poetry concerning Job Scott, the dying testimony of James Nayler, and passages from the writings of R. Archer and Henry Wotton.
