Biography
Mordecai Morris White. Mordecai M. White (1830-1913) and his brother Francis T. White were students when Friends Boarding School opened. In 1850 they went to North Carolina to free an enslaved family they had inherited, refusing a slave trader’s offer of $10,000 for the family. Mordecai became a bank president in Cincinnati, Francis a broker on Wall Street. Together they were responsible for Earlham’s first quarter million dollars of endowment.
