Scope and Contents

The White Papers consist of correspondence, legal papers, and photographs as well as genealogical materials. Of special interest are photographs and letters of slaves liberated by the Whites in North Carolina.

Biographical or Historical Information

Brothers Mordecai Morris White (1830-1913) and Francis Toms White (1833-1907) were early students in the Friends' Boarding School who went on to have successful careers as bankers and brokers in Cincinnati and New York. Mordecai Morris White graduated from Earlham College in 1850 and later served on the Executive Committee there. He married Hannah Amelia Coffin in 1858 and later settled in Cincinnati. Frances Toms White became a successful banker in New York City.
