Biography

Hulda C. (Hoag) Estes (1817-1875) was a Quaker from Vermont who was the other member of the faculty when Friends Boarding School opened. In February 1848, she and Lewis Estes were married. Tradition has it that they pursued their courtship under the guise of studying French together. “Studying French” became a campus euphemism for romance.
