Scope and Contents
Tilnias Thornburg was a Quaker farmer who lived near Neff in Randolph County, Indiana. This collection of diaries and genealogical material reflects rural life in Indiana in the late nineteenth century. His diaries reflect rural life; weather; work; visits to family and neighbors; neighborhood births, marriages, illnesses, and deaths; and attending Friends meeting, with ocassional references to politics and public affairs.

Biographical or Historical Information
Tilnias Thornburg was born in Randolph County, Indiana, Nov. 27, 1840, the son of Job and Lydia (Smith) Thornburg, Quakers from Ohio. The Thornburgs were a large Quaker family originally from North Carolina. On February 23, 1871, Tilnias Thornburg married Marandia Ralston (1851-1931), the daughter of James and Phoebe Jane (Clevenger) Ralston. They were the parents of five children.
Thornburg was a small farmer who owned land in Stony Creek Township, Randolph County. He and his family were members of the Poplar Run Friends Meeting near their home. He died July 1, 1926.

Gift, Lavora Lumpkin of Losantville, Indiana, a great-grandaughter of Tilnias Thornburg, in 2003. Also included was a typescript and genealogical material on the family prepared by her sister, Reba Allen.
