Biographical or Historical Information
Hole was born in Muncie, Indiana, August 25, 1913, the younger son of Allen David Hole, professor of geology at Earlham from 1900 to 1940, and his wife Mary Doan Hole. Francis Hole graduated Earlham in 1933. He took his MA at Haverford College in 1934 and his Ph.D. at the University of Wisconsin in 1943. After teaching appointments at Westtown School and Earlham and alternative service as a conscientious objector during World War II he joined the faculty at Wisconsin. He taught there until he retired in 1983. He died in Madison, January 15, 2002.
Hole was an active Friend who helped found the Madison Friends Meeting in 1938. He contributed articles to Quaker publications and was a regular speaker at Quaker gatherings and events. Much of the material in this collection grew out of his coauthorship with Ellie Shacter of A Little Journal of Devotions Out of Quaker Worship.
In 1941 Hole married Agnes C. Calvert, also a 1933 Earlham graduate. She died in 2004.
