Scope and Contents

The collection has been arranged in five series. The first consists of correspondence. The earliest letters are between mary R. Hoag and sisters. Most of the correspondence, however, is between Lindley and Maria Clark and Mary Clark or the Young family. It concerns family, Quaker affairs, and Lindley's education and career. The second series consists of genealogical material collected by Lindley D. Clark, including typescripts of letters of the Robinson family of Rhode Island. The third series is an essay by Edward C. Young on the death of his mother. The fourth consists of Daniel and Mary (Hoag) Clark's autograph books from their time at Friends Boarding School. The last series consists of copies of family photographs, including a striking image of Mary R. (Hoag) Clark's mother, Abigail (Robinson) Hoag.

Biographical or Historical Information

Lindley Daniel Clark was born in Carthage Rush County, Indiana, June 26, 1862, the son of Daniel and Mary R. (Hoag) Clark, Orthodox Friends and former students at Friends Boarding School, now Earlham College, in Richmond, Indiana. Mary R. Hoag was a granddaughter of Joseph Hoag (1761-1846), one of the mist prominent Quaker ministers of his day, and a sister of Huldah C. Hoag, one of the first teachers in Friends Boarding School. Lindley D. Clark graduated from Earlham in 1886 and then entered Maryville College in Tennessee, where he received a masters degree. He later received a law degree from Columbia College, now George Washington Unievrsity. From 1893 to 1927 he was an attorney for the U.S. Department of Labor in Washington, D.C., and from 1927 to 1932 on the staff of the U.S. Employees Commission. After retiring, he lived at Sandy Spring, Maryland. An active Friend, he was a recorded minister in Baltimore Yearly Meeting (Orthodox). On December 29, 1886, Lindley D. Clark married Maria Elizabeth Young (1862-1894) of North Lewisburg, Ohio. She was the daughter of Edward C. Young, a prominent Quaker minister an evangelist, and his wife Elizabeth Winder. They had three sons. In 1898 Clark married Dora Bradshaw, with whom he had two daughters.
