Ruthanna Mary Simms was a lifelong Friend who spent most of her life as an employee of Quaker organizations. This small collection consists of materials relating to civil rights and peace that she preserved in the last decade of her life.

Biographical or Historical Information
Simms was born in Chicago, Illinois, June 9, 1880, the oldest of four daughters of Richard and Florence (Griest) Simms. She attended Earlham College, graduating in 1909. In 1910-1911 she served as an assistant instructor under Elbert Russell in Earlham's Bible Department, then held a position at the Newberry Library in Chicago for several years. From 1920 to 1929 she was executive secretary of the Board of Home Missions of the Five Years Meeting of Friends. From 1929 until 1953 she served as executive secretary of the Associated Executive Committee of Friends on Indian Affairs. Her history of the AECFIA, As Long as the Sun Gives Light, was published in 1970. She died in Richmond, Indiana, April 1, 1974.
