Scope and Contents
Edward Backhouse Jr. was a recorded minister in London Yearly Meeting. This collection, consisting of a spiritual autobiography entitled "A Short Account of the Lord's Dealings with a Sinner, Saved by Him. Re-written 1878" is evidence of the impact of evangelicalism on English in the nineteenth century.

Biographical or Historical Information
Edward Backhouse Jr. was born in Darlington, England, May 8, 1808, the son of Edward and Mary Backhouse. The well-known minister Hannah Chapman Backhouse was his aunt. The family moved to Sunderland in 1819, where he spent the rest of his life. At age thirty, he underwent a powerful conversion experience and thereafter was an active Friend. He was recorded a minister in 1854. He died while on a visit to Hastings, May 22, 1879. Backhouse apparently did not finish the memoir, which ends in 1874. Beginning in 1980, one Elizabeth Wallis made a number of entries on religious subjects.
