Scope and Contents

The collection consists of correspondence of the family of Edward and Emma (Walmsley) Foster of Bristol, Pennsylvania, and Charles and Susanna (Brown) Leeds of Burlington, New Jersey, 1871-1932. It reflects the lives of Primitive Friends in Pennsylvania and New York and Wilburite/Conservative Friends in Ohio, both extremely conservative in doctrine.

Biographical or Historical Information

Edward H. Foster (1852-1914) and his wife Emma (Walmsley) Foster (1855-1900) were members of the Falls Monthly Meeting of Primitive Friends in Bucks County, Pennsylvania.  They were the parents of four children.  Edith and Lindley died in childhood.  Eliza was born in 1879 and Mariana in 1881. Eliza and Mariana Foster were educated in Quaker schools.  Between 1913 and 1916 they were on the staff of the Friends Indian School at Tunesassa, New York.  In 1916 Eliza married Henry B. Leeds (1864-1948), an Orthodox Friend from Burlington, New Jersey.  They had one child, a daughter, Mariana Priscilla, born in Buffalo in 1917. They lived in New York and Chicago before moving in 1930 to Barnesville, Ohio, where the Leedses operated a truck farm.  He was recorded a minister by Stillwater Monthly Meeting. In 1930 Mariana Foster married Wilson Mifflin Hall (1866-1953), a Conservative Friend from Damascus, Ohio, who had been on the staff at Tunesassa and who also served as principal of the Olney Friends School in Barnesville.  Mariana died in Damascus in 1943.
