Scope and Contents

The Carl Hawkins Collection is a large collection of genealogical material compiled by Hawkins, a resident of Richmond, Indiana. It consists of correspondence, genealogical charts and forms, newspaper clippings, and research notes and compilations on ancestors of Carl Hawkins and his wife, Esther (Myers) Hawkins.

Biographical or Historical Information

Carl Henry Hawkins was born in Spartanburg, Randolph County, Indiana, June 10, 1906, and spent his early life in Lynn, Indiana. After attending business college in Fort Wayne, in 1930 he opened a contracting business in Richmond, Indiana, which he operated until shortly before his death. He also served as Richmond Building Commissioner and was active in local Republican politics. In 1928 he married Esther Myers of Fort Wayne, Indiana, who died in 1972. They were the parents of six children, four of whom died in infancy. In 1973 he married as his second wife Mabel (Linderman) Cox. He died in Richmond in 1980. Carl Hawkins was an avid genealogist who began gathering information on his ancestors as a young man, including histories of Hawkins, Manning, Hutchner, Myers, and Kunberger families. He also published a newsletter on the Quaker Hawkins family.
