Scope and Contents

The Jenkins-Dickinson Collection consists of ledgers, correspondence, and photographs relating to the family of Dr. Charles M. Jenkins (1854-1929), a prominent Richmond, Indiana, Orthodox Quaker, businessman, and optometrist. It is especially valuable for its pre-Civil War daguerreotypes of area Quakers, and unusual nineteenth-century photographs.

Biographical or Historical Information

Charles M. Jenkins was born in Montgomery County, Ohio, Dec. 5, 1854, the son of Evans and Emaline (Lewis) Jenkins.  He moved to Richmond as a young man, first operating a jewelry store and then becoming an optometrist.  He also became active, with his family, in the affairs of the South Eighth Street Friends Meeting.  He died in Richmond, May 11, 1929. Charles M. Jenkins was twice married.  His first wife was Ellen Winder Dickinson, born in Richmond, Feb. 27, 1868, the daughter of James Hunt and Mary Jane (Winder) Dickinson.  She died in Richmond, May 10, 1897.  In 1908, Charles M. Jenkins married Bertha L. Thornburg (1879-1965), a native of Economy, Indiana. Much of the material in the collection relates to the Dickinson family.

Separated Materials

An obituary book of Whitewater Monthly Meeting was placed in the Indiana Yearly Meeting Archives, while ledgers and account books of the jewelry store and optometric office were transferred to the Wayne County Historical Museum.
