Scope and Contents

The Samuel C. Mills Collection consists of five small notebooks, one of which bears Flora P. Mills’s name. Three are synopses of sermons and lectures, some dated. The other two contain addresses, financial records, and notes on religious meetings and conventions.

Biographical or Historical Information

Samuel C. Mills was one of the early pastors among Gurneyite Friends and served as one of the first superintendents of Indiana Yearly Meeting. This small collection reflects his activities in the 1890s. Samuel Cook Mills was born near West Newton, Indiana, Feb. 21, 1859, the son of Amos and Mary Elizabeth (Cook) Mills. He attended Earlham College from 1882 to 1885 without graduating. He taught in Quaker schools at West Newton and Salem, Indiana, before becoming pastor of the Friends meeting at Vermilion Grove, Illinois, in 1888. He subsequently pastored Friends meetings in Sheridan, Carmel, and New Castle, Indiana. At the same time he conducted evangelistic meetings in Western, Baltimore, and North Carolina yearly meetings. In 1895 he became the Indiana Yearly Meeting (Gurneyite) superintendent of pastoral and evangelistic work, serving until 1898. He then became pastor of the Friends meeting at Knightstown, Indiana. He died at Bloomingdale, Indiana, May 16, 1900. On Oct. 24, 1889, Samuel C. Mills married at Bloomingdale, Flora Pickett, daughter of Lot and Asenath (Canaday) Pickett. She was born near Bloomingdale May 11, 1863.They had no children. In 1910 she married as her second husband Elbert B. Morris of Coloma, Indiana. She died at Bloomingdale, Aug. 22, 1943.
