Biographical or Historical Information

Fred E. Smith was a prominent Quaker pastor and official.  Smith was born in Washtenaw County, Michigan, January 26, 1872, the son of Alfred D. and Electa (Pasco) Smith.  He was recorded a Friends minister as a young man, and served as pastor in a number of Friends meetings in Indiana, North Carolina, Western, and Iowa yearly meetings.  He also served as an official in Quaker organizations, including several years as the field secretary of the Five Years Meeting of Friends. Fred E. Smith was married twice: first to Alice E. Hays (1875-1905), and in 1907 to Mary E. Lawrence (1878-1960).  His daughter Olive G. Smith (1909-1987) attended Earlham College in 1929-1930.  Smith died in Richmond, Indiana, December 21, 1952.
