Biographical or Historical Information

Jean McGrew Stoffregen was born Jean Elizabeth McGrew on October 14, 1919, and was raised with her brother, Jameson, in Chicago by her parents, Glen McGrew and Emily Jameson.  Jean earned degrees in philosophy and law from Indiana University.  She worked as a legal secretary and law clerk for the Indiana Supreme Court and for the Chief Justice of that court at the Nuremberg Trials.  She was married to David Stoffregen, a 1938 Earlham alumnus, in 1949. Jean had a lifelong interest in the suffering caused by war, discrimination and poverty.  She researched topics related to intentional communities, environmental issues and was active in the Cincinnati community.  Jean and David raised four children, Philip, Emily, Roger and Thomas, three of whom graduated from Earlham College (Philip 1973, Emily 1975 and Roger 1976).  Jean earned a Master's degree in social work in the 1960s and was a Quaker for more than five decades.  She was active in leadership of the Religious Development and Library commitees and the Senior Seekers for Community Friends Meeting in Cincinnati.  She died on August 21, 2008.
