Gordon Graves Collection

 Collection — Multiple Containers
Identifier: FMS-186

Scope and Contents

The Gordon Graves collection is composed primarily of anti-war materials collected by Graves throughout his life. These materials include organization newsletters, pamphlets, photocopies of newspaper clippings, brochures, and more, with the earliest dating to 1900 and the latest to the 1950s. The collection is organized in four series. The first series is Organizations, which is composed of informational materials and other publications. These materials are grouped alphabetically and mainly by the organizations which published them-- including the Comittee on Militarism in Education, the National Council Against Conscription, the War Resisters' League, and several others. The rest, for which provenance is unclear, are grouped by topic-- such as anti-war, socialism, or universal military training. The second series is Bulletins, which is composed of news bulletins and newsletters, arranged alphabetically by title. The third series is Purdue, composed of materials relating to this university where Graves taught. The fourth series is Miscellaneous, consisting of one-of-a-kind items that could not be placed in any other category. The bulk of the items in this collection illustrate the changing state of anti-war or pacifist activism during the 1920s, 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s.

Processing Information

The collection was received in a disorganized state, and so during processing a new order was imposed. Newspaper clippings were photocopied onto acid-free paper, and the originals were discarded. The collection includes a few handwritten personal papers from Gordon Graves. During processing, these were placed in the Miscellaneous series, because they are outside the primary scope of the collection.
