Jeremiah Hubbard Collection

Jeremiah Hubbard (1777-1849) was a prominent Orthodox Quaker minister in North Carolina and Indiana. He was a central figure in the Hicksite separation in 1827-1828, particularly in Ohio Yearly Meeting. Later he became controversial for his outspoken support of linking the abolition of slavery with colonization of former slaves. This collection consists of a "Farewell Address" written in Ohio in 1828.

Scope and Contents Material in the small collection falls into two groups. About half pertains to the family of Thomas Jessop (1715-1783), a Quaker who died in Guilford Co., N.C. It includes "Testimony" of his grandmother, Mary Jessop, concerning her husband Timothy Jessop who died in Yorkshire, England, in 1695; Thomas Jessop's 1760 certificate of marriage to Hannah Bishop in Carteret Co., N.C., and letters among his children. Joel Bean Collection

Joel Bean (1825-1914) was a prominent Gurneyite Friend of West Branch, Iowa and San Jose, California, and a leading critic of revivalism among Friends in the 1880s and 1890s. This collection consists of a copy of his entry in the Haverford Dictionary of Quaker Biography, and a copy of a 1906 letter on the Revival movement.

Tom King, a California Friend,was interested in the history of liberal Quakers on the West Coast. He transcribed the diaries and letters of Joel Bean (1825-1914), a central figure in 19th century Quakerism and founder of what became Pacific Yearly Meeting. The original diaries and letters are at Swarthmore, but Swarthmore gave us permission to reproduce the transcripts here.
