Joel Bean Collection
Joel Bean (1825-1914) was a prominent Gurneyite Friend of West Branch, Iowa and San Jose, California, and a leading critic of revivalism among Friends in the 1880s and 1890s. This collection consists of a copy of his entry in the Haverford Dictionary of Quaker Biography, and a copy of a 1906 letter on the Revival movement.
Joel Bean Transcripts
Tom King, a California Friend,was interested in the history of liberal Quakers on the West Coast. He transcribed the diaries and letters of Joel Bean (1825-1914), a central figure in 19th century Quakerism and founder of what became Pacific Yearly Meeting. The original diaries and letters are at Swarthmore, but Swarthmore gave us permission to reproduce the transcripts here.
John Allen Diary
John Allen (1809-1891) was a Friends minister of Deer Creek Meeting in Grant County, Ind. The diary is mainly concerned with his travels in the ministry in Indiana. There are a few miscellaneous notes, 1881-1887. Typescript included. Gift of Anita Mott Weddle and Wilda Mott DeCou, 1975.
John and Jane Walls Mss.
John and Jane Walls were fugitive slaves from North Carolina who passed through Indiana and were aided by Ephraim Stout (1798-1867), an anti-slavery Friend of Hamilton County, Ind. The collection consists of newspaper stories about the Walls home near Maidstone, Ontario, and a copy of an 1854 letter from Stout.
