Scope and Contents

The Henley-Trueblood Collection consists of photographs, daguerrotypes, and other images of nineteenth century Quakers largely in Washington and Rush Counties, IN.  Most are related to Edwin P. Trueblood (1861-1951), long-time Earlham faculty member, and his wife Pennina (Henley) Trueblood (1863-1943). Many of the photographs are identified.

The Jenkins-Dickinson Collection consists of ledgers, correspondence, and photographs relating to the family of Dr. Charles M. Jenkins (1854-1929), a prominent Richmond, Indiana, Orthodox Quaker, businessman, and optometrist. It is especially valuable for its pre-Civil War daguerreotypes of area Quakers, and unusual nineteenth-century photographs.

The Plummer Papers consist of an 1827 diary and notebook, photographs, and copies of writings by and about Plummer.

White Family Papers consist of diaries, correspondence, business and legal papers, genealogical material, photographs, scrapbooks, newspaper clippings, and other writings of six generations of a prominent Quaker family in Perquimans and Pasquotank counties in North Carolina and in Henry County, Indiana. The Joseph R. Evans Family Collection consists of correspondence, photographs, and genealogical material on a Quaker family that was central to the founding and development of Earlham College. It also documents Quaker reactions to the Civil War, and contains some of the best pre-1900 photographs known of the campus.

The collection consists of five images. One may be a self-portrait of Watson dated 1852. Two others are of Thomas Jay (1813-1890) and his wife Sarah (Yount) Jay (1819-1901), Quakers who lived near West Milton, Ohio. The others are of a young man holding a cigar, a post-mortem child's picture, and an unidentified man.

Scope and Contents The Leland K. and Kathaleen Johnson Carter Collection consists of correspondence, diaries, photographs, and genealogical material documenting the lives of a number of Quaker families in North Carolina, Ohio, Indiana, and Kansas in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The collection is especially valuable for Quaker settlement in Indiana, the Conservative Separation of the 1870s among Orthodox Friends, and the work of the Friends Reconstruction unit in France during World War I. The Smith Papers include a variety of documents, photographs, and materials, nearly all relating to Logan Smith's pastoral and missionary work. This collection documents his life and is typical of the activities of a Quaker pastor from the 1940s into the 1970s.

The Merle L. Davis Papers consist of correspondence, notebooks, photographs, reports, and other materials documenting the career of Merle Leonard Davis as a Quaker minister, missionary, and administrator. The collection contains significant material for the history of the Five Years Meeting of Friends (now Friends United Meeting), Quaker missions, and Friends in Kenya and Cuba.

Mildred White (1894-1988) was a Quaker teacher and missionary. Her papers illustrate the history of the Quaker schools at Ramallah, Palestine, life at Earlham College, and the history of Friends in Indiana. It includes not only family correspondence and photographs, but some genealogical material the Mildred White gathered and research material from Lois Jordan's biography of aunt, Ramallah Teacher, published in 1995.
